“I have always dreamed about developing my own product ranges.”

Dr. Judey Pretorius is a highly accomplished biomedical scientist and product development specialist with extensive experience in acute, chronic, and post-surgical wound healing, regenerative medicine, and cell therapy. She holds a Master’s degree in Genetics and Molecular Biology and a PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Drug Design. Her passion for innovation led her to co-found Biomedical Emporium, where she develops advanced cosmeceutical and therapeutic skincare products.

1. Tell us about your academic background and when you realized you wanted to become a biomedical scientist.

I hold a Master’s degree in Genetics and Molecular Biology, followed by a PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Drug and Development Design. I’m also concluding an Advanced Diploma in Dermal Aesthetics.

My career began in the pharmaceutical industry. I’ve worked with multinational, national, and parastatal organizations in pharmaceuticals, cosmeceuticals, medical devices, and tissue engineering. I’ve designed and optimized products for leading brands and eventually decided to create a business that combined all my expertise with my passion for innovation.

I always dreamed of developing my own medi-aesthetic product range—products that trigger a therapeutic and biological skin response.

2. What was your first breakthrough in wound care and aesthetic treatment? How did it feel when your idea was validated?

I specialize in identifying trends in the aesthetic industry and turning them into commercial products in the lab. Some of Biomedical Emporium’s products are among the most dynamic available, both locally and internationally.

A turning point for me was realizing the power of collaboration. Interacting with over 3,000 people monthly helps me understand skincare concerns and identify market gaps, which leads to better formulas and solutions.

We also host free Biomedical Treatment Days across South Africa to help treat acute skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, acne, and post-oncology skin issues. I attend 10–20 events monthly, engaging with the public and presenting innovations to dermatologists, plastic surgeons, biomedical scientists, pharmacists, and more—often at universities and conferences.

3. What makes Biomedical Emporium’s products unique?

Our business integrates three key disciplines: the pharmaceutical industry, medical devices, and cosmeceuticals. Our R&D applies biotechnological methods aligned with international standards. All our products comply with regulations in Europe, Canada, the USA, Australia, and Asia.

One standout ingredient is Retinol, featured in products like Retinol Serum and Retinol Night. It’s a multi-bioactive molecule used in treatments for acne, aging, pigmentation, and more. Retinol promotes skin cell growth, tissue differentiation, and antioxidant protection.

4. What is the difference between cosmetic and cosmeceutical products?

At Biomedical Emporium, we only use pharmaceutical-grade raw materials in all formulations. Our products are cosmeceuticals, meaning they produce biomedical benefits when applied to the skin. They act at the cellular and molecular level to stimulate therapeutic responses.

While the word “cosmeceutical” isn’t in most dictionaries, it merges “cosmetic” and “pharmaceutical,” referring to products that offer pharmaceutical-grade benefits. These products comply with strict standards and are backed by safety, efficacy, and quality control protocols such as GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and GLP (Good Laboratory Practices).

Even ingredients like Vitamin C—common in cosmetic formulations—can meet international compendia standards and deliver medicinal benefits. Cosmeceutical manufacturing requires compliant facilities, validated equipment, and qualified personnel to ensure product safety and effectiveness.

5. What products help reduce fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes?

The skin around the eyes is the thinnest and most delicate, making it prone to collagen and elastin loss. This leads to early signs of aging, such as wrinkles and expression lines.

To combat this, use products rich in ultra-hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and peptides. These ingredients enhance skin barrier function, retain moisture, improve elasticity, and help prevent new wrinkle formation.

6. What’s your favorite face moisturizer?

I’m absolutely in love with the Skin Biotic — a probiotic for your skin. It restores skin biodiversity and balance. It’s especially effective for sensitive and eczema-prone skin, delivering phenomenal results
